The rainbow boa at the Guadeloupe Zoo

A fascinating snake with iridescent reflections

The rainbow boa (Epicrates cenchria) is an emblematic snake of the tropical rainforests of South America (Brazil, Suriname and Guyana). It takes its name from the iridescent brilliance of its scales, which reflect light like a prism, creating magnificent colored reflections. This phenomenon is due to the microscopic structure of its scales, which diffracts natural light.

The species is classified as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN because its populations remain stable across its range. However, deforestation and illegal capture for the exotic reptile trade can represent localized threats.

The rainbow boa is a constrictor: it is not venomous, but it locks its prey in its rings to immobilize it. It feeds mainly on small mammals, birds, and sometimes amphibians.

It is a nocturnal snake. It hunts on the lookout and orients itself thanks to excellent thermal sensitivity. Indeed, it detects the body heat of its prey even in the dark.

This snake measures between 1.50 m and 2 m in adulthood, with a slender body and powerful muscles. He likes humid environments and spends part of his time hidden in the hollows of trees or in banks. In nature, it plays an important role in regulating populations of small mammals.

At the Guadeloupe Zoo, the rainbow boa is not the only snake: the reticulated python is also impressive to see.

Quelques anecdotes

Rainbow boa

A dress of natural light

Under the sun or direct lighting, its scales project real rainbow reflections. It's not a painted illusion or special pigmentation: it's natural light diffraction. Visitors often get the impression that it shines brightly.

Rainbow boa

A snake that doesn't sweat... but loves the bath

The rainbow boa appreciates very humid environments and loves to immerse itself partially in water to regulate its temperature and keep its skin supple. Contrary to what one might think, he is not amphibian... but he is clearly a fan of “tropical spa” sessions in his pool.
