The commitments & missions of the Guadeloupe Zoo

The Guadeloupe Zoo is part of the new generation of zoological parks committed to the protection and preservation of wild fauna.

Our actions extend to the Antilles but also internationally, thanks to partnerships with recognized associations and specialized networks.

Research and conservation programs

The Guadeloupe Zoo supports and finances numerous in situ and ex situ conservation programs. These initiatives aim to protect species in their natural environment, but also to develop breeding programs. Examples of actions carried out:
- Studies on the ecology of local fauna in Guadeloupe, Martinique and Guyana (jaguars, tapirs, peccaries, iguanas...)
- Support for international programs: Andean condor, giant armadillo, white-handed marmoset.
- Contribution to European programmes (EEP and ESB) that coordinate the reproduction of endangered species.

Examples:

  • White-handed tamarin in Colombia
  • Grand Hapalemur of Madagascar
  • Rehabilitation of ecosystems in Seychelles
  • Asian cheetah in Iran
These partnerships make it possible to develop skills, resources and ensure the sustainability of conservation programs.

The research mission at the Guadeloupe Zoo

The zoo regularly collaborates with teams of researchers in order to improve scientific knowledge about animal species. These studies contribute directly to the preservation and protection of species. This involves raising public awareness.

EAZA member zoos only exchange animals (without buying or selling). They participate in more than 370 breeding programs (EEP) and ensure global population monitoring (ESB)

These programs promote the reproduction of endangered species and strengthen their preservation in the wild.
