The bird with the big colored beak

The toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) is undoubtedly one of the most iconic birds in South America. Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina, it is immediately distinguished by its huge orange beak, which can measure up to 20 cm, almost a third of the total length of its body!

The species is classified as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN because it is still widely distributed in its native range. However, deforestation and habitat fragmentation can locally reduce its populations. The toco toucan nevertheless adapt well to open landscapes and wooded areas, including near human settlements.

Despite its impressive appearance, its beak is light and hollow, composed of fine keratinized plates. It is used to catch fruits, insects, even small lizards or bird eggs. This beak also acts as a thermal regulator: it allows the bird to evacuate heat when it is hot, much like a natural air conditioner.

The Toco Toucan measures around 60 cm and most often lives in small groups or pairs. It is a nocturnal, sociable and very expressive bird, known for its hoarser and sonorous cry. It nests in natural tree cavities, where the female lays 2 to 4 eggs. Both parents participate in the incubation and feeding of the young.

At the Guadeloupe Zoo, the toco toucan is one of the most observed tropical birds. With its bright appearance and bright colors, it immediately catches the eye of visitors, who are often amused by its confident whereabouts in the aviary.

Quelques anecdotes

Toucan Toco

A beak that defies nature

Its impressive orange beak is not only an aesthetic asset! Thanks to its lightness and sensitivity, the toucan can catch fruit at the end of the finest branches, inaccessible to other birds. It is also a deterrent weapon against curious people who are a bit too close.

Toucan Toco

A balancing nap champion

The toco toucan has a unique way of sleeping: it bends its beak under its wing and draws its tail over its back, forming a compact ball perched on a branch. An improbable but perfectly stable position, which often amuses healers and morning visitors.
